In the longest WED night draft season in league history, 6 months, at least the playoffs were worth watching. The very first playoff game was between Salllty and Curious Georges and the game was 2-1 in the 3rd on 2 PP goals by defense man Miller for Salllty and a goal for CG by Wilson when Fasani tied the game up halfway through the period. This game went to OT with neither team scoring in 10 minutes so it went to a shootout. Wilson scored for CG as the 3rd shooter to give them the 1-0 until the last shooter, Broger, scored for Salllty so we went to sudden death where Greenwell missed and Fasani scored to win the game for CG and send them on to the 2nd round. Mi Sho Horny took a 3-0 lead against Goodfellas in the next game on goals by Douglass, Freimann and Hines and the game looked like it may be a blowout. GF's regrouped and scored 2 goals from Ginevan and Marwaha to put the pressure on but Bender kept them off of the board with solid goaltending and MSH walked away with a 3-2 victory. Top seeded Pancake Party got all they could handle from Skip-To-My-Luis but managed to score first on a goal from Fish from Dunner early in the game. STML deserved a better fate in this 1-0 game but PP goaltender Makowsky was to have no part of it turning away numerous chances and PP squeaked by on their early goal and great goaltending. The final game of the evening saw the biggest upset with last place O.D.B. taking down the leagues top seeded regular season team 3-2. ODB was up 2-1 on goals from Dyke and Wozny when Wagner scored from the point late in the game and it looked like another OT game. ODB's Dyke wanted no part of that as he scored off the shaft of his stick immediately after MP's had tied the game up and ODB pulled off of the upset 3-2. MP's other goal was scored by Borichevsky. All four first round games were decided by one goal.
In the semi's Pancake Party took on O.D.B. for the 3rd time this season in what was a great battle. ODB scored first on a goal from Turner for a 1-0 lead. PP scored a goal by Dunner to tie it up and a breakaway goal by Barrett made it 2-1 for PP. Fay scored to give to give PP the 2 goal lead before Barzilai scored in the 3rd to make the score 3-2 but that ended up being the final and PP moved on the finals. ODB captain had brought pancakes to the game to eat in front of PP captain Fish but didn't get to rub it in. Loved the idea tho Payne Train... The other game was never a contest between Mi Sho Horny and Curious Georges as MSH was paced on offense by a Hines hat trick and another goal from league rookie Beauchemin. CG's lone tally was from McElwain for a final score of 4-1 as MSH never let CG's offense get going and Bender shut the door in net whever they did.
The finals were put on hold for a few weeks due to weather and ending up being played at 6PM to accomodate Caps/Pens fans and game 7 here in D.C. The Caps/Pens game left Pancake Party without 4 regulars for the Championship game against Mi Sho Horny who had 1 at the game. PP wasted no time scoring on a great breakout by Dunner from Barrett a few minutes in. Later in the same period the same combo struck again for a 2-0 lead at the end of the 1st. PP played a smart forechecking game with only 7 players and stuck to it with a 2 goal lead continuosly frustrating MSH on their breakouts and keeping the scoring chances to a minimum. A late PP for PP almost backfired as Douglas had a breakaway which Makosky foiled and that was it for MSH. Fay scored in the last minute for PP for the final result of 3-0 as the team celebrated and drank out of the brand new WED night Cup. Co-Captains Barrett and Cuocci accepted the Cup on behalf of Fish who chose the Caps getting throttled over winning a championship. :) Fish did however captain his 4th Cup winning team so I guess I should mention that. A special shout out to Michael Bender, the goalie of MSH, for playing his championship game and then heading to the Caps/Pens game. Playoff MVP honors went to PP's Jeff Dunn with 3 goals and 1 assist, Danny Douglas was voted MSH's most valuable player and Mike Makowsky was voted MVP with 3 Wins and a 0.67 GAA average in the playoffs. Another shout out to Matt Benson for his 1st WED night Cup after quite a few seasons without one. Congrats. Regular Season honors went to Douglass and Hines of MSH with 10 goals and Douglass again with 16 points. For the goalies Erb of MP had 7 Wins and Bender led the league with a 1.86 GAA. Good luck to everyone with the new season starting now...
